Filling my cake with whipped cream. Advice?

I'm making a cake for fathers day. It's a yellow cake with chocolate chips in it. I want to torte it and fill it with whiPped cream. I have some questions. Normally when you fill a cake you put frosting around the edge then fill the middle an then ice the rest. Should I do that? And when should I fill it? Like can I fill it a day ogle two before or the day of?
